What type of yarn to choose
Sometimes choosing a yarn is not that simple. Especially considering the options which are available to you out there. So I hope this article helps you in choosing the right yarn for you.
There are several options of yarn material to choose from mainly divided in acrylic(synthetic), plant fiber and wool.
Synthetic:
Acrylic yarn - on the cheaper side, it is soft but has a tendency not to hold its structure. Sometimes used for imitation fur and fleece. It has similar ability to wool to keep in warmth, therefore a good choice for winter mittens.
Polyester yarn - another synthetic yarn, which is more durable. Sometimes used as substitute to wool for big projects, like blankets.
Plant fiber:
Cotton yarn - also not expensive and holds together quite well. Although the yarn is lightweight its fibers have little elasticity and don't stretch.
Bambo yarn - similar to cotton and both are good for lightweight projects.
Wool:
There are many options to choose from, and are mostly pricier than synthetic or plant fiber yarns.
Alpaca yarn - made from Alpaca fur. Small diameter fibers makes yarn soft. Generally stronger than wool.
Wool yarn - comes from sheep. Strong and durable fibers, keeps you warm and holds structure well.
Cashmere yarn - made from hair of the Cashmere goat and is also quite expensive. Yarn is soft but not as strong.
Lama yarn - similar to alpaca yarn
Angora yarn - made from fur of Angora rabbits. Very soft fibers. It is sometimes blended with other yarns because fibers lack elasticity.
Merino yarn - from Merino sheep. In comparison, softer than regular wool.
Shetland yarn - comes from Shetland sheep in Scotland. It is a bit softer than regular wool yarn, but thicker than merino yarn.
There are more material options out there than are listed here, but these are the more common ones.
