DIY Wood bookshelf

A bookshelf sounds rather complicated to build, but not always it should be. This bookshelf took me about a day to build. It might not be the most beautiful build, but it is practical and fits well in rustic style attic loft.

Like any good project, this one also starts with gathering materials.
While finding the right one might not be a fast job, transportation does not take as long.
I set up my own backyard mill to prepare the necessary materials for my very own bookshelf, which I proudly can tell is one of the few furniture I have that is not from IKEA.
So for this project I needed 2 10x10cm logs in length of about 2m and 5 10x2cm planks, the length of which are the desired bookshelf itself. In my case 1,40m.

Only instruments that were needed, were a hand drill, chisel, screws and patience. Naturally there was a occasional need for some sandpaper, good deal of measuring and a lot of patience.
The logs had to be made a bit smoother, just for a cleaner look.
In each of the logs I marked the location of the shelf planks and chiselled where the planks would sit in.
Just opposite of the chiselled grooves I drilled two holes in where the screws would hold the planks and would mask the screws themselves.
The construction comes together like good set of LEGO. In my case the build is made easier by that it was set between the floor and the overhead beam.
But in the end I had a nice simple bookshelf which while was not of the highest grade, but looked beautiful because of the natural wood it was made of.
