DIY Book binding and a cool gift.
Book binding is a great experience and makes for a awesome gift for someone. It might seem a daunting task, but when you actually start the process, you will find it much easier a task than it appears.
What you will need:
1. Gauze ( 2 layers will do ).
2. Paper ( size and quantity as much as the desired thickness of the book ).
3. One cardboard sheet ( If you use a A4 size sheet and A4 size paper, then you will have to shorten the paper sheet length by about 2cm ).
4. PVA glue.
5. A material for book wrapping ( in my case it is a cloth ).
6. Something for decoration ( not obligatory ).
1. Cut the cardboard sheet in to equal pieces.
2. Fold the paper sheets in half and stack them together. Make separate stacks with 3-5 folded sheets and stutter the paper together in the middle.
3. Soak the gauze in PVA glue. Stack the paper folds together and put the gauze on the back of the stack while the stack is pressed down with some weight.
4. Lay down the cloth (or your chosen material), Put PVA glue on one side of the carboard sheets (if you want cut also a strip of cardboard for the back of the book and glue it in between the cardboard, see picture) and glue them to the cloth with enough distance left between for the stacked paper to go in.
Put on some weight so the glue sets better. After it sets put the glue on the leftover cloth and fold it on the cardboard and also use some weight to press it down.
5. In the end take two paper sheets, smear them with glue and glue these to the cardboard and the stacket paper, so to keep it all together and so giving it a cleaner look.
The cover can bee decorated with whatever materials you wish, I used rolled up leather strips, which I glued to the cover.
That is it. Now you have a book.
